Self Retracting Lifelines
A Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL) is a safety device used in various industries to protect workers from falls. It is a type of fall arrest system that consists of a retractable cable or webbing that is attached to an anchor point and a harness worn by the worker. They are usually used when workers need more mobility while working at height, as the retractable lifeline allows the worker to move freely, but in the event of a fall, the device will lock and prevent the worker from falling any further. SRLs are just one part of a personal fall arrest system, but they are essential for anyone working at height, as they play a crucial role in keeping workers safe and can save lives and prevent serious injuries.
What Are the Parts of an SRL?
A self-retracting lifeline features 2 main components: a retractable lifeline and a housing unit.
The retractable lifeline connects to the worker's body support with a connector hook and will automatically extend and retract as the worker moves. These lifelines are typically constructed of galvanized steel cable, stainless steel cable, or durable webbing.
The housing unit houses the retractable lifeline and features a connection point that attaches to the main anchor point. Some housing units offer an option for a winch to be attached, which can be used to help raise or lower workers to safety in the event of a fall.
What Is the Typical Fall Distance When Using an SRL?
The actual distance an operator can fall will vary based on their attachment point or offset of the system. If the unit is used for overhead anchorage and mounted directly above the user, a typical fall will be no further than 12-18 inches before the braking action of the SRL. The maximum arresting distance of most Guardian and DBI-SALA units is 42 inches. However, if the operator is attached at an angle or is on a wire rope system, the dynamic sag could allow them to fall further than the stated 42 inches. Compared to a safety lanyard, self-retracting lifelines have a shorter activation distance and overall arresting distance, limiting freefall to two feet or less. When fall clearance is less than 18-1/2 feet, SRLs should always be used.
Can I Still Use My Self-Retracting Lifeline After a Fall?
When a fall occurs, a visual indicator on the unit will become apparent. If this is the case, the unit will need to be returned to a certified service center, and a competent person will need to inspect/repair the unit before it can be put back into service.
